A set of seven original Musgraves Patent ventilating windows with arched tops. First developed for use in stables and agricultural buildings, they were designed to keep interiors well aired while avoiding draughts. The design draws on the principles of the Sheringham Ventilator, invented in the mid-19th century by Mr Sheringham, which used a weighted flap to turn fresh air upward into the room. This system was widely adopted in estate architecture, schools, hospitals and barracks during the Victorian period.

The Musgraves Patent range translated these ideas into robust cast iron frames with arched heads, allowing the ventilator to be built into brick or stone openings with both function and presence. Each frame carries the wording Musgraves Patent Belfast cast into the ironwork.

Glazing varies across the group. Some frames are bare, some retain partial glazing and three are fully glazed, though with cracks or losses to the glass. All have their original weights present but the chains and operating mechanisms will need repair or restoration. The cast iron frames are sound, with surface rust and pitting from age and use.
