A batch of 6 authentic Victorian Minton encaustic floor tiles featuring a striking Gothic Revival design.

Manufactured by Minton Hollins & Co, the design is centred around a bold repeating quatrefoil motif, with each of the four lobes containing darker leaf-like and scrolling details inspired by medieval and Gothic architecture. At the centre where the points of the quatrefoils meet sits a small eight-pointed star or stylised flower, adding further depth and interest to the pattern. Slender fleur-de-lis and cross-shaped elements extend from the main design, linking each tile to the next and creating a continuous geometric pattern when laid together. The colour palette is typical of Victorian encaustic tiles and consists of rich chocolate brown detailing, warm ochre and buff tones forming the background, and contrasting cream inlays which highlight the main floral motifs and give the design its distinctive character.

Unlike printed or painted tiles, the pattern is deeply inlaid into the clay body using traditional encaustic techniques. This means the design runs through the tile and will not wear away with use. Thick and robust tiles with a timeless appearance. Ideal for period restorations, architectural salvage projects or as feature hearth tiles. They would also make an attractive display piece for collectors of Victorian decorative arts. The tiles display honest wear and minor edge chipping consistent with their age and previous use. These signs of use add to their character and are part of the appeal of genuine reclaimed Victorian material. A superb small batch of 19th century tiles with strong Gothic character and a beautiful aged patina.
